Control your passwords before someone else does

Reading Time: 3 minutes

With privacy breaches now commonplace for companies that have not adequately protected their clients, it is more important than ever to keep your online data protected and private.

So, how do we protect ourselves online? Start by taking control of your passwords before someone else does!

Password overwhelm is enough to send any sane person completely mad. But, having strong passwords is vital to keeping yourself, your family and your business safe online; with more online threats than ever, it is essential not to become complacent and to remain vigilant.

Tips for creating a strong password

We know it can be overwhelming when setting up new passwords. So here are some tips for creating a strong password:

  • Choose a passphrase or sentence rather than a password
  • Avoid personal information in your password
  • It is best to include a mixture of symbols, numbers and upper and lower cases letters
  • Do not reuse a password – each account access should be unique
  • Resist the urge to let your device store and auto-populate your passwords
  • Use a secure password keeper to manage your passwords.

An example of how you could change an insecure password to a secure one is instead of using your dog’s name – Chester, use – I love for my dog Chester 100%. This short sentence includes a symbol, number, and upper and lower case letters and can be written in so many different ways that it would be very difficult to break into.

Common Passwords

Now we have you thinking about your passwords and how important they are, let’s have a look at a list of the most common passwords that are used:

  • 123456
  • 123456789
  • Picture1
  • Password or admin
  • 111111

Are you guilty of using any of these? Some are the default passwords you may have been given when setting up a new online account, like admin or password. You must change these passwords; otherwise, it’s like leaving a spare key under your front door mat.

Forced password changes

Have you ever entered your password to be told it is incorrect or needs to be updated?

If so, you know the drill – You click a link to change your password, follow the steps and jump through 10 hoops of security questions (sweat dripping from your brow as you try to recall your 3rd-grade teacher’s name). Then you prove you are a real-life human by ticking boxes of traffic lights (known as a captcha). Now, you are at the final hurdle – only to be told you have used this password before and must choose something new!
